Trapezius Slimming / Shoulder Slimming

What is Trapezius slimming?

Trapezius slimming includes the use of neuromodulators, such as Botox and Dysport, to help relax and slim the trapezius muscle. The trapezius muscle is a large, triangular muscle that covers the neck, shoulders, and back. This treatment has both functional and aesthetic benefits. Functionally, adding Botox or Dysport to the trapezius muscles can help alleviate tension in the shoulder and neck from chronic overuse of the muscle. From an aesthetic perspective, the enlarged trapezius muscle will be slimmed to create a beautiful shoulder contour and the appearance of a longer, beautiful neck. This treatment is very popular among soon-to-be brides to achieve a longer, feminine neck silhouette for their wedding day.

There is little to no downtime associated with the trapezius slimming. Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activity for the first 24 hours but can resume normal activities immediately after the procedure. It is normal to experience mild soreness or muscle ache for 24 hours after the procedure.

How long do the results last?

The trapezius slimming result will take about 6-8 weeks from the day of the treatment to see the full slimming impact. Once the slimming has been achieved, patients may want to return in 6 months for maintenance of the treatment for continuation of result. The longevity of the treatment will depend on the patient’s baseline muscle strength, the amount of Botox or Dysport injected, and the number of times the treatment has been repeated.

How many units is required for trapezius slimming?

Depending on the muscle strength of the trapezius muscle, a range of 80-100 units of Botox OR 240-300 units of Dysport is injected to achieve the best results. A second treatment may be necessary in 3-4 months for further slimming and/or maintenance of treatment.

Who is the ideal candidate for this treatment?

An ideal candidate for this treatment is someone who presents trapezius hypertrophy, or enlarged trapezius muscle, and is seeking a longer, slender shoulder and neck line. People can develop large trapezius muscles due to various reasons - genetics, physically demanding jobs, chronic use of the shoulder and neck muscle, poor posture, weight lifting, and more. This treatment can significantly improve patients who suffer from neck and shoulder pain and certain types of tension headaches.

What are the pre/post injection instructions?

There are generally little to no pre-injection instructions. We always recommend avoiding blood thinners to prevent bruising and to be in general good health. After the treatment, we recommend avoiding strenuous activity for the first 24 hours. Patients are able to resume normal activities immediately after the treatment.
